Fly Rod Baits

No fishing lure collection is complete without a variety of great Fly Rod Baits. Redditch England became a famous location for some of the worlds finest fly fishing equipment of the mid 1800's up to the early 1900's. The manufacturing of fishing hooks in Redditch started sometime around 1770, the first notable manufacturers were actually needle makers. The 1898 catalogue of Henry Millward & Sons boldly claimed (they manufacture fishhooks on a very extensive scale, being probably the largest makers in the world). However in 1803, Polycarp Allcock, who was an apprentice hook maker, started his own business. His son Samuel Allcock was the man who really expanded and created the business to what it would become. Samuel was an entrepreneur & great salesman, he expanded the business to include reels, rods, along with other fishing tackle accessories. By 1880, Allcock could make the claim (“They were The Worlds Oldest and Largest Manufacturer of Fishing Tackle”). At the end of the 19th Century the Allcock Company had become the largest fishing tackle manufacturer in the World. It would employ more than 1000 people in the town of Redditch, the name Allcock would be known Worldwide and would even set up shop in Canada under Allcock, Laight & Westwood. Some of the carded flies in our collection are from the great town of Redditch, from makers like, A. E. Rudge & Son from the Unity Works. M Lee & Son, and others like AA, and W Bartleet & Sons, & Milward's Iron Arm brand. Other English makers like Turrall of Devon, and the great German company D.A.M. Many of the major lure companies in the U.S like Creek Chub, Heddon, South Bend, Pflueger,  Paw Paw and many more created some of the absolute finest fly fishing baits of all time. The variety is vast, collecting flies could be a full time hobby, and for some like my wife it is. For us we like to blend flies into our collection to add depth and value to our overall collection. Flies are often overlooked and undervalued by collectors some will pass right by and leave great value behind.  Other brands to look for include Orvis, Weber, Worth and Huron. Sometimes you can find complete dealer cards from these makers. Get out there and have some fun hunting for these little gems.
